MEET THE BEAUTIFUL GIRL WHO IS MAKING LONDON FALL IN LOVE WITH KOLKATA'S STREET FOOD

Shrimoyee Chakraborty grew up in Kolkata, moved to Mumbai to complete her undergrad studies at Sophia College and then jetted off to Manchester Business School for a masters in global business analysis, with a major in economics. Her résumé includes stints at Disney, Unilever and Star TV, but it wasn’t until she quit the corporate world — to pursue her passion for food fulltime — that she actually found her calling.

Gaining popularity as a food blogger and following it up by hosting pop-ups with home-style Bengali grub on offer, Shrimoyee finally took up the challenge to own and run an eatery in London some years ago. “I had always dreamt about it, but had thought that it was too far-fetched to achieve,” she recalls. Despite many voices of dissent warning her against the move (“You will never raise funding,” “Don’t quit your steady job,” and so on), Shrimoyee persisted, turning her passion into a mega paycheck! We can safely say ‘and the rest is history,’ because only a year later, Shrimoyee is the proud entrepreneur behind not one but two outposts of the popular Bengali restaurant, Calcutta Street.
Only last night, London celebrated the launch of Calcutta Street in Brixton — enjoying a generous serving of Kolkata’s best street food, alongside music that marked the golden jazz age of India. Though it has largely the same menu as Shrimoyee’s restaurant on Tottenham Street in Fitzrovia, this venue also serves up a few new dishes, like biryani and chicken chaap. As if London’s wildly exciting food scene wasn’t vibrant enough, we can tell you Shrimoyee adds exotic flavour with this one!
